Saturday 20th September 2008 Experience maritime Hamburg! Hamburg is built by the water. The port, the network of drainage canals, called "Fleets", its navigable canals and the river Alster provide this city with a very special atmosphere. The port of Hamburg is the second biggest in Europe and ninth worldwide for container traffic: More than eight million containers per year are transshipped through it. This makes Hamburg sound like an inhospitable industrial site but it is indeed a true "hands-on" port and one of the most popular attractions in Germany. There is the whiff of freedom and far-away countries in the air. All who've stood on its piers, the famous "Landungsbrücken", understand why Hamburg is called the "gate to the world".
Starting from the St. Pauli piers, we cross the old tunnel under the river Elbe (built in 1911), cruise along the green Elbe slopes on the ridge of which runs the Elbchaussee, one of Hamburg's magnificent residential roads, until we reach the pilots' and captains' village of Oevelgönne (museum port).
The cruise continues past the Airbus industrial site and the ferry jetty of Teufelsbrück along the picturesque district of Blankenese and its famous stairs. The ship makes a U-turn and sails across to the impressive Köhlbrand bridge in the modern container port of Altenwerder, into the deep sea port bays (depending on occupation) and continues down the Elbe to the docks of Blohm & Voss, past the beautiful fish auction hall and the musicals tent until we reach the historic warehouses area and the city leisure craft port. We pass the former lightship, now a restaurant, and view the cathedral bell tower, the famous "Michel", followed by the city landscape at the overseas pier and the museum ship "Cap San Diego" to return to our starting point at the "Landungsbrücken". Come and enjoy with us this final highlight of the congress and experience Hamburg from its impressive waterways!
